Distinguished and Famous people from Monto
🏉 Mal Meninga
Mal Meninga spent his primary-school years in Monto after being born in Bundaberg. In his State Library oral history, he recalled following his father’s rugby league work, including coaching the Monto Blues. That family sporting life preceded his own remarkable career as a powerful centre, Australian captain and leader of Canberra premiership sides. His Australian South Sea Islander heritage is another central part of the account he gave with his brother Geoffrey. Monto belongs to the childhood and school chapter, before the representative jerseys and later coaching responsibilities made his name nationally familiar.
🎨 Joel Fergie and Travis Vinson
Artists Joel Fergie, known as Zookeeper, and Travis Vinson, known as Drapl, spent six weeks creating Monto’s murals in 2020. Their work drew on conversations with local people rather than applying a generic rural scene. At Three Moon, an elder and granddaughter appear within imagery connected with Gooreng Gooreng stories and the night sky. Other paintings included familiar residents and agricultural subjects. The project gave the artists a direct working association with the town, while local organisers used public art to tell community stories and encourage people to stop, look and spend time there.
🎨 Gil Jamieson
Gil Jamieson was born at Monto in 1934 and attended the local state school before further education at Gatton. Farming, welding and office work preceded his full commitment to painting. After years in Melbourne’s artistic circles, he returned to Monto in 1971, using it as a base for journeys into remote Australia. His pictures could be forceful and confronting, drawing on working life rather than offering a comfortably picturesque bush. A mural painted near Alice Springs stretched twenty-two metres. Monto was both his birthplace and later working home, placing lived experience of the land behind an adventurous national exhibition career.
